In hot pursuit of Toronto’s casino prize, MGM Resorts International and Cadillac Fairview unveiled their vision for a revamped Exhibition Place, dangling the prospect of a decade of free admission to the Canadian National Exhibition as part of their pitch.
Executives sketched out on Wednesday a 3-million square foot development they say is worth $3-to-$4-billion, would create 5,000 construction jobs and 10,000 permanent positions at the resort. The vision — not a proposal, officials say, but an example of what is possible — accommodates the 18-day festival by shifting its footprint to make room for a C-shaped hotel, up to 1-million square feet of retail, a 900-seat home for Cirque du Soleil, 10 restaurants, and a 250,000 square foot casino.
“I felt like a rabbit in a carrot patch,” admitted CNE president Brian Ashton, a leading critic of casino plans for Exhibition Place who remains unconvinced his family-friendly fair would survive.
